Replacing your Mercruiser 5.7LX Engine in a 1996 SeaRay Sundancer 240

Since you have the 12 bolt intake the dressed Vortec engine will be a great option while allowing you to go up a little in Hp/Torque. The AL exhaust will be a great option and reduce the weight by approximately 100 Lbs as well. The main thing will be to go thru the engine break in (see link below) then once that is complete verify the top end wide-open-throttle rpm to evaluate the propeller sizing. You can be assured that over-propping is most likely what hurt the previous engine if the original propeller was causing low engine rpm’s (see other link below for engine failure due to over-propping).

I had a lengthy conversation with Rick a couple of days ago. I think the long block dressed with electrical and fuel systems is probably my best option. My intake has 12 bolts. I think I really want to go with aluminum exhaust package as well, but I sure would like your recommendations. The engine will be in our 1996 Sea Ray 240 Sundancer so a speed boat she isn’t, but I like to get on plane and cruise at about 25 MPH or so. I have the original Alpha One drive with a 15” pitch prop. When I purchased the boat about 4 years ago she had a 17” inch pitch, but I saw low RPMs at WOT which is probably what helped get us to this point today. The previous owner probably didn’t know any better and loaded the engine. Thanks.

Regarding EFI systems there really aren’t any add-on systems that don’t cost out nearly as much as the motor itself so they are rarely ever sold for these projects. Body: My 1996 5.7LX has seized up and I am replacing the engine myself. Could you prepare me a proposal for what I will need beginning with a long block. I would like to replace the stock exhaust with an aluminum system. I am assuming my intake and carburetor are fine, but would like to consider fuel injection if I can afford it. The starter is bad also…..Thanks
