Hi Andy,

Would you please be kind enough to provide a price for a set of anodes for the following;

>  Bennett Trim Tabs , single ram, ones that are on already are ” Martyr CMR-3″  , these are in minimal wear condition.

>  Mercruiser Drive Serial No OW 941386 and Transom Serial No OW 721067, fitted to 5.0l MPI. Anodes on the leg also have minimal wear.

Could you suggest the most economical way of getting these out to Australia and an indication of costs. Is it more feasible to ship 2 sets for the freight price of one.

I don’t know who you use but am happy to follow your suggestions.

The boat is a Searay 240 Sundancer (2008) and has arrived in terrific condition , thanks in large part to the agent I purchased from.

This boat has only been used in Lake Mary , freshwater, but will be used only in saltwater here. Hence my concerns with the corrosion side of things. If have been told by seemingly ‘ know alls’  here , that these motors are a piece of crap and will give up the ghost quickly here in our waters. Looking at the motor now here, and without being able to peer inside the jackets and gaskets, they appear to be well constructed. Apart from the routine flushing as discussed with you is there anything else that I can do to prolong the corrosion factor.

Thanks for your time

Cheers
John

John,

Good to hear from you and glad to see you had a happy holiday season. Yes we do have the Bennett anodes as well. Just need to know which ones you need. The best way to get this info is to measure them and let us match them based on the dimensions.

Hi Andy,

The boat arrived here in Brisbane on the 24th December. I’m going up to Brisbane to trailer the boat back to my place this w/e. I went up over the Xmas / New Year period to see if the boat arrived here unscathed- it appears to be in excellent order after the ordeal of travelling all the way from the states.

I will be intouch with you re the anodes and ors shortly. Do you have Bennet trim tabs anodes?

I need to go over the motor , to check belts, filters etc, which if I need, then I’ll get from you as well.

Brisbane to where I live is about 600kms.

Speak to you soon and all is good..

Cya

Hi Andy,

No problem, Yes still waiting for the boat to arrive from Savannah. Due here on the 21st December 2010.

I will be ordering new replacement anodes from your firm after the boat arrives.

Also, will be looking at the flushing system that you developed , for the engine not running and whilst  handy to freshwater at the wharf. I will buy a set of earmuffs and flush through the leg as I’ve normally done with outboards/ or run the motor whilst the leg is in a drum full of fresh water.

Until I get the manuals from Mercruiser, cant say what the manufacturer states for the flushing procedure to be effective.

Does the anode kit (alum.) include the anode located on the stainless steel prop shaft.?

I will get the mercathode system checked when in the water.

Thanks, haven’t forgotten, just haven’t got a boat to fiddle around with at the moment.

Can you ship from there without too many worries, ie the freight part, wrapping and sending.

And payment?

Cheers
John

John,

Thanks for the follow up along with your feedback. You are correct that the newer Bravo 3 drives are better with regards to corrosion because they utilized a better anode setup. You are also correct that the best approach to flushing is just to do it regularly. Anything beyond this gets marginal in the additional benefit versus the main thing of just flushing. Having been engineers at Mercruiser we’ve dealt with this issue for many years and have witnessed the pro’s and con’s first hand. There were many companies during my tenure trying to present complicated approaches to Mercruiser when in fact the simplest basic flusher yielded better results than anything tested aside from the good ol’ ear muffs. Here’s a link showing the product I patented.

Flush Patent

With regards to flushing I would recommend the standard muffs if you want to flush while running the engine. Otherwise if you want to flush without having to run the engine I would recommend this setup. http://tinyurl.com/2ehaenx

Replacing the impeller is standard protocol however I would also recommend replacing you anodes when you get the boat. http://tinyurl.com/26qxd3y

Hi Andy,

Firstly , thanks for replying.

The Sea Ray 240 is on its way to Australia now, and is landing at Brisbane on the 18TH Dec.

I’m finding it difficult to sift through all the information that has been put on the net with regards to corrosion prevention in both the engine and drive leg for mercruiser.

The drive leg is a bravo 111 with additional anode on the cavitation plate and mercathode system. The engine is a 2007 mercruiser 5.0l mpi with 50 hours and smart guages. The engine is not mercruisers seacore type.

The boat was purchased from Florida, Lake Mary, St John River, freshwater lake, the boat undercover dry stored on a trailer since 2008. Never left in the water.

The boat has just had it’s 50 hour service, record sent to me, no problem mentioned by service mechanic, apart from impellor being replaced. This may be a standard

service requirement however.

I do not know how the previous owner flushed the system after use, but the boat has been very well looked after , so I imagine he has done this routinely..

I’ll be running the boat in saltwater here, and want to protect the engine and leg from corrosion. The boat will be trailered most of the time and flushed after use on land and access to freshwater. Whilst there will be occassions when we will be camping on the boat in the saltwater environment and on these times would wish to flush as well. (marina)

There appear to be many criticisms with regard to the corrosion problems experienced by owners of Bravo111 legs, and from what I can see these may have been for earlier models. The exhaust , runs through the leg .

Additives appear to work well when plumbed into the raw water intake, others say no need to have any extra precautionary measures. Some manufacturers state that the salt conversion additves can be used directly with saltwater intake when flushing , others only with freshwater flush.

As long as it is flushed religiously after use then you cant really do any more than that.

In answer to your questions,

Your website was found on a forum answering some questions, not mine, on corrosion in Bravo 111 drives via Google (australia).

Also your website came up when enquiring re flushing additives for mercruiser/ bravo legs under the same search engine. The information contained in the technical side appreciated from my level of questioning.Technical reports far out weigh personal criticism in forums , for me anyway.

Cheers
John

John,

Thanks for your inquiry and the opportunity at earning your business. So basically you are looking for something to flush out the exhaust? Do you leave the boatin the water or pull it after each use? What type of exhaust system is the boat equipped with; water lift muffler?

John writes:
Hello, I have just purchased a sea ray 240 sundancer 2008 model with a mercruiser 5.0l mpi 260 php inboard. The motor has 50 hours ,and has only been run in freshwater. It has only had it’s 50 hour service and has had an impellor change. The motor has a half system of cooling the motor, engine block only. I can only run the boat in saltwater here, and my previous boats had mercury outboards which were flushed using muffs after each outing. What would you recommend with flushing this motor. The ability to flush with freshwater whilst on the marina in saltwater appeals to me, as well as on the trailer. Cheers John
