How Do I Determine the Rotation of My Boat’s Engine?

Question: What is the best way to determine the rotation of Marine Engines? My engine is currently not running and out of the boat so I really don’t have any way to run the engine to determine this.
Answer: The best way to determine this is to look at the direction the engine itself turns. For standard engine rotation the engine harmonic balancer will turn clockwise when looking at it from the front. Since the sea water pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley both run on the groove side of the belt, we therefore know the pump must turn the same direction as the engine. In contrast to this the engine circulating pump runs on the flat side of the belt so therefore it would turn the opposite direction as opposed to the engine. In this case where the engine is not in a running condition you would look at the Marine Flywheel to verify which direction the starter motor has been engaging the flywheel. From this you will be able to determine which direction the engine rotates when running.
