Mercruiser Big V8 Inboard Repower Project – Bruce

Bruce,

Thanks for your inquiry and the opportunity at earning your business. I’ve attached a few links below to should help to provide you with some direction. There are many difficulties involved with Big Block V8 repowers today since everyone quit offering complete 454’s, and the 496 motor that began replacing the 454’s in 2001 were discontinued from GM just this year. If that isn’t enough the quickly decreasing inventory that remains on these 496’s has just about been eliminated with customers rushing to purchase what they can. All of this limited engine availability in combination with the new 2010 emmissions rules creates a serioulsy complicated and difficult repowering situation to say the least. This is an especially tough situation for you due to the fact that you have one standard and one opposite rotation engine needing to be replaced. There are simply NO NEW opposite rotation 454 Cu-In engine’s available.  As for the remanufactured products there are NO opposite rotation engines available in the higher Hp version. Since it would require changing out your stringers, engine/gearbox mounting, and replacing your transmission to switch over to two standard rotation engines I would recommend going with the remanufactured longblocks and then replacing the exhaust, starter, alternator, and fuel pump. This is the most common option customers in your position are doing today. I’ve provided you with several links that help identify the correct terminology while explaining the options. Can you review this and then let me know what direction makes the most sense for you. Let me know if you need any further technical information or help placing your order. In either case I will be glad to assist!
