There are various changes that were made on the 4.3L engine throughout the years. Listed below is a link that will assist you in choosing the correct longblock for you application. Technical Tips. This is a 1996 and later new longblock as intended to replace the Mercruiser, Volvo Penta, and OMC versions. These Vortec style engines can be identified by the aluminum oil pan and the (8) bolts used to fasten the intake manifold to the cylinder heads. The engine can however very easily be used for retro-fitting earlier engines down as far as 1986 by simply re-using your existing harmonic balancer. Since the Vortec engines no longer have the provision for a mechanical fuel pump, and therefore an electrical fuel pump must be added. This engine comes with a composite timing cover, and oil pan. NOTE 1: In 2008 GM changed the front timing chain cover to an aluminum version versus the composite cover. This engines comes with a timing cover however there is no provision for a crank sensor which is required on the MPI engines. If you have an MPI engine this in NOT the correct longblock. 

NOTE 2: There is no provision for a mechanical fuel pump on these later style Vortec engines, and therefore an electric fuel pump must be used. This block does not include an oil filter.
