"MARINE ENGINE REPOWERING (Diesel vs. Gas)"

The new year is upon us and this means many avid boaters are once again focused on the task of deciding how they want to proceed with getting their boat into condition for the upcoming 2006 boating season. It doesn't take long after looking at the price of new boats to realize they like their current boat more, and more. With this comes the process of determining what is required to repower your existing boat, including the possibility of converting it from gas to diesel power. Many boaters shy away from the Gas-to-Diesel conversion as they fear the amount of work required to change stringers, fuel systems, gauges, etc is far too great for what they are capable of handling, or for that matter can afford. This newsletter is aimed at supplying information to illustrate that the cost to convert an existing gas powered boat over to diesel, due to recent technological advances, may not be nearly as far out of reach as one would think.

When it comes to engine horsepower versus engine torque in marine engine applications, most people make the common mistake of focusing on the marine engine horsepower rather than the marine engine torque. When it comes to both gas marine engines as well as marine diesel engines, in most cases focus should be directed to the torque more so than the horsepower. There is a common saying within the industry that "Horsepower sells a boat however Torque is what actually moves it". This could not be closer to the truth!

When looking to re-power and especially when looking to convert from gas to diesel , we recommend spending more time comparing the torque versus the horsepower. The reason for this is that most boaters are concerned with how the boat planes and cruises rather than top speed. A standard Pleasure Rated product can only be operated at full throttle 1/12 of the operating time. When converting from the typical 330 Hp GM 454 engine to a "high rpm" 300 Hp diesel, the additional 100 Lb-Ft torque produced by the diesel depending on boat weight will allow approximately 5-6 more sizes in prop pitch and therefore offset the 1,000 rpm given up with the diesel. However, most people believe that since the gas engine makes 330 Hp it is going to outperform the 300 Hp diesel. With the typical 250 Hp small V8 gas engine, a "high rpm" 250 Hp diesel will yield approximately 100 Lb-Ft additional torque and therefore offer both better performance and fuel economy.

Regarding the "Direct Fit" advantage of the their diesel engine product line, MarineDiesel offers the industries only diesel engine that will directly replace most existing GM based gas engines without requiring major hull, electrical, and/or instrument modifications. To read more regarding the numerous performance and economical benefits you can visit the MarineDiesel website by selecting the following link; Supercharged Diesel Power!

If you would like more information regarding re-powering and how to estimate performance when converting from gas to diesel you can either go directly to our Torque versus Horsepower page or call us toll free at (866) 336-3396 and we will be glad to assist. If you are interested in repowering but prefer to stay with a gasoline engine, you can select any one of the following links for further assistance on gas engines.
